How to add product reviews to eBay listings (and why you should!)
Since early 2016, eBay have been allowing sellers to add product reviews to their eBay listings. This means that when potential buyers view your listings, they will see reviews and star ratings of the same product from across eBay. The aim is to increase buyer trust and help sellers boost their listings’ conversion rates.
While eBay will automatically add product reviews to relevant listings, there are some things you need to do to make sure eBay can connect your listings with the right reviews. How eBay product reviews can boost sales for your listings
Providing the complete buyer experience within eBay can increase sales by helping users to make an instant decision whether to buy while they are still looking at your listings. If the user has to leave your listing to do further research, this puts off the buying decision and will inevitably lead to a certain percentage of users delaying or abandoning their purchase altogether.
Even if buyers do later decide to make a purchase, there is no guarantee that they will return to your listings. They could just as easily end up on a competitor’s listing, meaning they get the sale. By combining the discovery and research phases of the customer journey, eBay are making it more likely that a user who lands on your listing will go on to make a purchase from you. How eBay product reviews work
Reviews are linked to specific products – including the exact make and model. These mean they provide 100% relevant information for buyers. The reviews also include the reviewer’s user name for increased transparency and trust.
There are two types of product review eBay provides – verified and unverified.
Verified user reviews are from users who have purchased the product in question from eBay.
Unverified reviews are from buyers who purchased the product elsewhere.
One of the most important features of eBay product reviews is the overall star rating a product receives. This is an average of the star rating given by users in both verified and unverified reviews of a product. This star rating is displayed at the top of all relevant listings, so is a hugely important trust factor for potential buyers.
It’s important to note that there is no link between product reviews and your seller rating. This means that even if a customer does not like a particular product and leaves a negative eBay user review, this will not adversely affect your seller rating.

Get product reviews on your eBay listings
So, how do you make sure eBay shows product reviews for your listings? The key is to make sure eBay knows exactly what product each of your listings is for – it should then do the rest.
How to add product reviews to an eBay listing:
- The easiest way is to select your product from the existing eBay catalogue when creating a listing. This removes any ambiguity about your product’s identity and allows eBay to automatically pull in all of the relevant details, including product reviews. All items in the eBay catalogue are eligible for reviews.
You should also make sure to include as much detail as possible to help eBay connect your product with the right reviews. This includes:
- the brand
- exact product name
- and other key product identifiers such as an ISBN or Universal Product Code
- You will also want to include as many relevant item specifics as possible to make precisely identifying your products easier.
As long as you follow these steps, you should start seeing relevant reviews straightaway, unless nobody has left one yet for the product in question. If that is the case, or if you are keen to get more reviews, you can encourage users to leave a review.
How to generate product reviews on eBay
eBay automatically contacts sellers asking them to leave feedback on a product and a review if they haven’t done so within a month. If you are a Selling Manager Pro subscriber, you can also add your own personalised message to these automatic emails.
To further encourage reviews, you can also email buyers yourself through My eBay. Be careful not to spam users with excessive or overly aggressive requests for reviews, though, as this could have the opposite effect or cause them to become annoyed and leave negative seller feedback.
What to do if you are getting inappropriate reviews
If you find that your product is being matched with the wrong reviews, you should first check that this is not an issue with your listings – for example that you haven’t accidentally selected the wrong item from the eBay catalogue or used the wrong product identifiers.
Assuming you haven’t made a mistake, you can use the Report function to let eBay know there is a problem. You will find a Report button next to every review, allowing you to notify eBay of the issue.
You can also report reviews if you feel they are inappropriate for any other reason, but be careful how you use this. You should not report reviews simply because they are negative, unless you are confident the information they contain is inaccurate or intentionally misleading.
